Understanding the 4Cs – Your guide to choosing the perfect diamond

Selecting a diamond is more than just choosing something that sparkles — it’s about understanding what gives each gem its brilliance, rarity, and value. At Poh Seng Jewellers, we believe knowledge is the key to making confident and meaningful choices. This guide walks you through the 4Cs of diamond quality — Cut, Colour, Clarity, and Carat Weight — the global standard for assessing and comparing diamonds.
Cut: The Sparkle Factor
The cut determines how well a diamond interacts with light — it’s what gives the gem its brilliance and fire. Even a flawless diamond can appear dull if poorly cut. A well-cut diamond reflects light internally and externally to create that signature sparkle.
Pro Tip: Prioritise cut quality — a beautifully cut diamond can appear larger and brighter than a heavier one with a lesser cut.
Colour: The Purity of Tone
Diamonds are graded from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown). The closer to D, the rarer and more valuable the stone. While completely colourless diamonds are prized for their purity, many buyers prefer near-colourless grades (G–H) that offer excellent value without visible colour.
Pro Tip: In yellow or rose gold settings, a slightly warmer diamond (I–J) can still look stunning and natural.
Clarity: Nature’s Signature
Every diamond bears tiny natural inclusions — nature’s fingerprints. Clarity grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye and don’t affect beauty.
Pro Tip: Choose a diamond that is “eye-clean” — where inclusions aren’t visible without magnification — for the perfect balance of beauty and value.
Carat Weight: Size and Presence
Carat refers to a diamond’s weight, not its size. Larger diamonds are rarer, which increases their price exponentially. But carat should always be balanced with cut — a smaller diamond with excellent proportions can look brighter than a heavier stone with a dull cut.
Pro Tip: Look for carat sizes slightly below “milestone” weights (e.g. 0.9ct instead of 1.0ct) for better value without noticeable difference in size.
